I am in charge of the Safe Passage for our PTA. This program involves parents who volunteer to help children get to school safely, and to be someone safe to turn to in case of an emergency. My one big project, besides making sure that people wear their lovely fluorescent green vests, is to organize and plan Walk to School Day. National Walk to School Day was this Wednesday, October 8th. I am so glad that it is over, but it was so much fun! Last year was the first year that we participated, and I learned a lot from that experience. We invited the Mayor, city
Representatives, the newly formed Cottonwood Heights Police Department, the Fire Department, and many parent volunteers. We reserved 3 different parking lots in the area for the children to be dropped off in so they could still walk to school. I got up at 5:15 am that morning to put orange cones and signs out along the safe walking routes. The signs were way cute and said things like "Keep going, you are almost there!" Or, "I love the fresh air!" The kids really loved to read the signs as they walked. We had such an awesome turn out! Out of the aprx. 450 students, there were only a dozen cars that pulled into the parking lot, and 3 of them that parked. We gave out Hot Chocolate and prizes to everyone that walked. It was a great turn-out! I forgot to get balloons this year, and I ordered the prizes about 2 days too late (they showed up at the house yesterday), but we mixed the hot cocoa this year and had the food in only one spot instead of 3, so all in all there was a great improvement! I don't have a copy of the picture that they took with me and all the city officials who showed up. They teased one of the police officers that the short people had to stand in front, he was a head taller than me. I felt like a little school girl surrounded by giants! I was excited to have them all there though! After all that planning and preparing, I am so glad that it is over until next year though!
Here is a photo that shows the Mayor in the back handing out prizes to just a handful of those who walked.
This is Mayor Cullimore and Lt. Brenneman from the Cottonwood Police Dept.
This is another Police Head (forgot his name, oh, and he is the short one!), Representative Gordon Thomas and the PTA President, Jennifer S.
Here is the Fire Department parked out in front of our house! It was so Awesome to have them come!

That really IS awesome, Katy! What a huge production to organize. Our "Walk to School" day was in September ... I don't know why the SF schools did a different day if October 8th is National Walk to School Day. Anyway - we were suppose to have Cosmo come and hand out treats - but he didn't show up. The kids were SOOOOO disappointed. And Krystal just cried and cried because she didn't get a treat (I walked with my kiddos ... and Krystal too)- only school age kids got a treat. It was a disaster, I think.
Yea for Walk to School Day! Way to go organizing it! You're great!
I saw you guys walking past our place last week and then saw the fire-truck and wondered what was going on. I almost ran out in my pj's to see if something had happened, such as an accident. But then later that day I realized it was walk to school day and I remember you doing it last year. Fun stuff!! :)
You go Katy. I think our school didn't have an awesome Mom organizing it this year so it got skipped right over.
Last year we did it and it was fun.
